We therefore concentrate on what we know best, namely pan-European equity derivatives, both Exchange traded and OTC. Our aim is to source liquidity and tighten spreads for our client base, whether that be for a £1bn hedge in the FTSE 100 or for a relative value trade in a pair of illiquid French stocks.

Because we speak to such a wide universe of derivatives users, including banks, institutions and hedge funds, we know where to go to find liquidity, and once we have found it we are experts at executing the trade.

Demand for equity index derivatives has spiralled over recent years as financial institutions have discovered the flexibility that these powerful tools provide.

Insurance companies increasingly use them to protect their solvency ratios, hedge funds use them equally to gain exposure or to protect their portfolios and banks utilise them as an essential risk management implement.

XBZ prides itself on its huge experience in this field and the company is renowned for the expertise of its price discovery and execution in the index arena.

The proliferation of structured products linked to baskets of equities as well as the stellar growth in the hedge fund industry, particularly those focussed on Special Situations, has created increased demand for derivative products linked to individual equities.

Wherever there is bid or merger activity, for instance with the recent Telefonica and MMO2 takeover stories, or whenever a new convertible bond is issued, options activity in the relevant underlyings will soar and XBZ will be at the forefront of that activity.

Equity derivatives provide the core of XBZ's business and aside from vanilla
trades on individual indices and single stocks we regularly execute
transactions on baskets of indices, baskets of equities or equity
index versus their components dispersion trades.

In addition our expertise is always called into play during
periods of high dividend activity, where we play an
important role matching buyers and sellers of dividends
whether in the cash equity market or via swaps,
options or single stock futures.
